Editor's Verdict:

WebEx MeetMeNow is a fully featured and reliable web conferencing application developed by the well known networking experts Cisco. As you might expect coming from a company who has such an excellent reputation for quality networking products, MeetMeNow is a very high quality, polished tool which is almost faultless in its operation. One small aspect of MeetMeNow stopped it from getting to the top spot in our list, but it is well deserved of its number two position.

The main function of WebEx MeetMeNow is to allow you to host an online meeting from your PCs desktop. Up to 15 participants can join and can view everything that happens on your desktop, broadcast from a webcam and even be allowed to take control of the desktop themselves. As the host you have full control over what the guests are allowed to do and can easily give them control of your desktop or mute their telephone if they get a bit too vocal!

It is extremely easy to start and join a meeting with WebEx MeetMeNow. The host application is only a 1.5Mb download and guests don't have to download any software at all. To start a meeting you just have to select the appropriate option from the system tray icon and provide the meeting code to your guests. There is also full integration with most Microsoft products so you can start meetings from within Word or Outlook. This makes it really simple to email out a web link that your guests can use to join the meeting.

For guests to be able to communicate in the conference they must dial into a special number and enter the meeting code that is provided by the application. The service itself is free, but your guests will be responsible for the call charges that are incurred. This is the one area where WebEx MeetMeNow loses its chance at our number one spot. We think it would make a lot more sense to include VOIP support in the application so that attendees can communicate using their computers over the internet without incurring any call charges. Of course there is nothing stopping you from using Skype alongside the meeting, but it adds a little bit of extra complexity into the process.

If WebEx MeetMeNow lets itself down slightly in the communication options available it more than makes up for it in the reliability of the service, and is probably one of the most reliable applications we tested. The MediaTone network it runs over is designed to operate at 50% capacity so that, even if there is a sudden surge in users, meetings can continue to run smoothly. Clearly a lot of work has gone into designing an efficient and reliable network so if this is a primary concern when purchasing a web conferencing tool MeetMeNow should be a serious contender.

As well as being reliable, MeeMeNow is a very secure application to use. All communications in meetings are encrypted using 128-bit SSL technology and it is the only application to have earned SAS70 and Web Trust certification to prove it is a trustworthy application. Meetings can also be password protected in order to stop any unwanted guests joining.

WebEx MeetMeNow is an excellent choice of web conferencing application. The only aspect that lets it down is that there is no integrated VOIP support. However the enhanced reliability and ease of use make up for this in a lot of ways and, depending on your requirements, could be more important anyway. A 14 day free trial is available on the web site so we recommend giving MeetMeNow a try today.
