Editor's Verdict:

Webconference.com is, unsurprisingly, a provider of web conferencing and audio conferencing solutions. The solutions on offer can be purchased as a monthly subscription and hosted on Webconference.com's servers or it is possible to buy the server hardware for a one off fee to install on your own infrastructure. The software itself works reasonably well, but isn't fully compatible with Linux or Mac OS. This won't be a problem for some people, but if your company uses a variety of different platforms you might want to look elsewhere.

Starting a conference with Webconference.com is easy, as is inviting participants, due to the integration with Microsoft Outlook which allows you to automatically send out emails. Once in a conference you can share your desktop with the other participants, either allowing them just to watch or giving them control of your computer. The user interface makes it easy to share files between meeting participants and work on documents together supported by the interactive whiteboarding and annotation tools. The one drawback of the application is that, although Mac and Linux users can join a conference, they can't share their desktops with other users.

During a Webconference.com conference participants can communicate using the integrated VOIP functionality which saves money on call costs. For participants who can't get to a computer for the conference, Webconference.com also provides a bridged teleconferencing service that integrates with the web conference. The standard dial in number charges your guests as a normal phone call would, but it is possible to obtain a toll-free number that your guests can use and you incur the charges for.

For security, Webconference.com encrypts all meeting communications with 128-bit SSL encryption, which is plenty to keep out anyone trying to listen in. Passwords are also required to join meetings and it is possible to specify how strong the password on a room should be. A number of other security features are in place and Webconference.com makes a whitepaper available on its website detailing security policies.

Webconference.com provides a good service and is not too unreasonably priced. However, the lack of full support for Mac and Linux users may put many people off. The reliability and security of the service is excellent and there is a good range of features on offer. While this would be a good consideration for a web conferencing service, there are also many similar companies offering similar products. For a good comparison we suggest having a look at some of the services in our top ten list.
